Herbology is a pillar in Chinese medicine and is used in conjunction with acupuncture and other modalities. It can stand alone as a treatment plan including a complete assessment of body systems as well as organ health. Traditionally, herbal medicines were used to treat difficult pathologies that could not be addressed solely with acupuncture alone. Fire cupping, an ancient and modern modality, is implemented by using glass cups, cotton balls and a hemostat to remove oxygen from cups creating a vacuum to attach to the surface of the body. Usually applied to the back, cups can also be applied to other parts of the body as needed. The emphasis is to allow stagnant lymph, blood and toxins to rise to the surface of the body to create space for fresh fluids to fill injured areas as well as to remove excess heat caused by illness. Cupping is commonly used to treat sports injuries, stress, tension and pain. We utilize Chinese medicine and assessment of meridians along the body to determine where blockages are located with a focus on those areas as well as organ health. Depending on the case, cupping can be implemented in conjunction with acupuncture or as a stand alone therapy.

Tui na, translated as “push grasp”, is an ancient Chinese medical practice that is considered to be the oldest system of bodywork. It can be implemented as a stand alone method of care as well as combined with other modalities such as acupuncture, herbology, and qi gong breathwork. It is based on the theory that imbalances of qi and blood, “bioelectrical forces and fluids” lead to stagnation causing tension and pain within channels and points in the body and sometimes injury. Sports injuries are the cause of imbalances and blockages in channels and points as well. Increased tension and pain can cause further illness at a deeper level affecting organ and internal health. Tui na combines acupressure and works in a manner like acupuncture without the use of needles. However, it is combined with acupuncture in many cases.

Gua sha, translated as “scrape sand”, refers to the appearance of petechiae the body presents beneath the skin. It is an ancient Chinese medical method that has been used as folk medicine up to modern times where it is used for cosmetic benefits. Various Western health practitioners utilize this modality in their care. It involves using a smooth edged tool usually consisting of stone, ceramic, or steel to unilaterally scrape the body to attract stagnant lymph, blood, and toxins to rise to the surface to create space for fresh fluids to fill deeper areas as well as to remove excess heat caused by illness allowing for improved circulation and overall wellness. We utilize Chinese medicine and assessment of meridians along the body to determine where blockages are located with a focus on those areas as well as organ health. Typically not designed for initial visits, the implementation of Gua sha is determined case by case with the consideration of specific health needs and conditions.
